The three basic kinds available are spring-action airsoft guns, gas airsoft guns, and electric airsoft guns. Their differences lie in their pellet velocity, rate of fire, and reliability. While the spring action guns are perfect for beginners and one-on-one practice with trainers, gas and electric airsoft guns are great for team gaming.

These non-lethal replicas of the real deal with ammunition made out of plastic pellets or rubber BB's soon gained popularity and today are used around the world as a high energy teaming activity with the same rules as those in a paintball pit.

Ammunition for airsoft guns have also come a long way since the first pellets used thirty years ago. Today, most plastic pellets are available in two basic sizes: 6mm and 8mm. Pellets are loaded into guns through magazines similar in appearance to those that load into real firearms. Magazines are available in ranges from low to high, depending on their capacity to carry bullets.

Pellets are usually low velocity and too light to penetrate the skin, although if used on a target who is not wearing safety gear, it could cause eye, and face injuries. When playing with airsoft guns, always make sure you are wearing a helmet and goggles. The safest way to transport an airsoft gun is in its carrier.

Although playing with airsoft guns can be great fun, especially in groups and war scenarios, it is important to take safety measures. Most states have strict laws about buying and owning an airsoft gun and their sale to minors is illegal. It is also illegal to carry an airgun to school. If used on someone not wearing a helmet and goggles, pellets can cause eye facial injuries. It is also wise to transport airsoft guns in their containers.
