Jack London: Hokey, episodic "biography" of famed author invests too much time maligning Japanese which was assumed to give topical slope to this period drama in 1943. Cast includes Michael O'Shea, Susan Hayward, Osa Massen, Harry Davenport, Frank Craven, and Virginia Mayo. (94 minutes, 1943)
Shack Out on 101: Lee Marvin is a cook named Slob at a seaside greasy spoon in this cold war classic. The waitress (Terry Moore) seems to be spending most of her time fending off the lecherous advances of almost all her co-stars, but in fact she is trying to stop nuclear secrets from leaving the country. This is positively a one of a kind film, with most of the action taking place on a lone shabby set. Cast includes Terry Moore, Frank Lovejoy, Lee Marvin, Keenan Wynn, and Whit Bissell. Daniel: A phenomenal adaptation of E. L. Doctorow's The Novel of Daniel, about Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who encounter discrimination due to their heritage in order learn to handle their own lives in the difficult 1960s. Not without its imperfections, however overall a seductive and incredibly well-made film. Cast includes Timothy Hullon, Mandy Patinkin, Lindsay Crouse, Edward Asner, Ellen Barkin, Julie Bovasso, Tovah Feldshuh, Joseph Leon, Amanda Plummer, and John Rubinstein. (130 minutes, 1983)
Belle Starr: AN elderly Tierney is miscast as infamous lady outlaw in gradually paced account of her lawbreaker occupation. Cast includes Randolph Scott, Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, John Sheppard (Shepperd Strudwick), and Elizabeth Patterson. (87 minutes, 1941)
Crusoe: An intense rendition of the oft-filmed Defoe classic, with Quinn cast as the title personality, a slave dealer who's shipwrecked on a deserted isle, where he must handle loneliness, seclusion, survival. The most captivating of all is his growing relation with black combatant Sapara. Cast includes Aidan Quinn, Ade Sapara, Warren Clark, Hepburn Grahame, Jimmy Nail, Tim Spall, Michael Higgins, Shane Rimmer, and Oliver Platt. (91 minutes, 1988)
